| The air photo below was taken in May of 2005. The long narrow water filled pit at center was once an Anthracite surface mine. After abandonment, the pit filled with water and was later acquired by the Minersville Water Authority. This pit overflows and feeds Minersville's main reservoir (seen at upper right). Interstate 81 was later built through the middle of this pit. Without planning, what was once a surface mine is now a water resource asset providing additional water storage for use in times of drought. Pre-mine planning could have maximized the form and function of this water supply reservoir. |
